You expect coffee to taste good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t expect it to tell a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost people only know coffee from caf\u00e9s,<\/em>\u201d says Mr. Tham, smiling as he hands us a small cup. \u201cThey don\u2019t know what comes before that.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before it became a trend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Tham’s family has been growing coffee in Tenom for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo machines back then,<\/em>\u201d he says. \u201cEverything by hand.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gestures to the drying beans laid out under the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStill like this today.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work behind every cup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We follow him through the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picking. Sorting. Drying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s repetitive. Slow. Physical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople think coffee is fast,<\/em>\u201d he says. \u201cBut growing it\u2026 is not.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why he stayed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At one point, we ask him why he didn\u2019t leave for the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shrugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomeone has to continue.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasting differently<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the final day, we sit for a tasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same beans. Same process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it doesn\u2019t feel the same anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
