His great-grandfather lived through the time of Antanom \u2014 a name that still carries weight in this part of Sabah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>He wasn\u2019t just a warrior,<\/em>\u201d Joseph says. \u201c<em>He was someone people believed in<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A story not written in books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Antanom led a rebellion against British rule in the early 1900s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Joseph doesn\u2019t start with dates or facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he tells us about trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>They invited him for peace talks,<\/em>\u201d he says. \u201c<em>He believed them.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>That\u2019s how they captured him.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walking where decisions were made<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The trail is uneven, quiet except for insects and distant water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it feels heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Somewhere along paths like this, they decided whether to fight or surrender,<\/em>\u201d Joseph says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You start to realise \u2014 history didn\u2019t happen in buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It happened here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Voices that stayed behind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, in a simple longhouse, we meet Linah, one of the elders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She pours tea slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Our parents didn\u2019t talk about it much,<\/em>\u201d she says. \u201c<em>But we knew.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Knew what?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>That something was taken from us.<\/em>\u201d said Linah again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this still matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph looks out toward the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>If we don\u2019t tell this story,<\/em>\u201d he says, \u201c<em>then Antanom becomes just a name.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking back, you understand something quietly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t about the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Walk this story on Helolokal<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/helolokal.local\/shop\/4d3n\/rebel-trails-of-borneo-trek-the-antanom-uprising-wwii-jungle-route\/\">http:\/\/helolokal.local\/shop\/4d3n\/rebel-trails-of-borneo-trek-the-antanom-uprising-wwii-jungle-route\/<\/a><br>Because some histories are still waiting to be understood.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The jungle doesn\u2019t announce its stories.
