\u201cMost people don\u2019t come here,<\/em>\u201d our host Rahim says, as we step onto the wooden jetty of his village. \u201cNot like this.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rahim grew up here \u2014 in a Bajau Laut community where the ocean isn\u2019t a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMy father was a fisherman,<\/em>\u201d he says. \u201cHis father too.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He points out toward the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe don\u2019t say we go to work. We say we go to the sea.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next morning, we head out on a small boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No luxury setup. No branded equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just masks, fins, and curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The reef is stunning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Colours you don\u2019t expect. Fish moving in patterns that feel almost choreographed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But then Rahim points something out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSee this?<\/em>\u201d he says, hovering above a patch of broken coral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis used to be alive.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later, sitting under a simple shelter, Rahim speaks more openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTourists come, they take photos, they leave,<\/em>\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey don\u2019t see what is changing.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overfishing. Waste. Warmer waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAll small things,\u201d he says. \u201cBut together\u2026 it\u2019s different now.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s no schedule here in the traditional sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You follow the rhythm of the community:<\/p>\n\n\n\n At one point, Rahim laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou are the first people who asked so many questions,<\/em>\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the third day, something shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You stop thinking like a visitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You start noticing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is our home,<\/em>\u201d Rahim says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not \u201cour attraction.\u201d Our home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before leaving, we ask Rahim what he hopes visitors take away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He doesn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI hope they understand.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUnderstand what?\u201d<\/em> we ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat this place is not guaranteed to stay like this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n There are many beautiful islands in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But very few where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not escapism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s no grand farewell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just a quiet dinner, the sound of water, and a sky full of stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rahim sits with us for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWill you come back?\u201d<\/em> he asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We don\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLife on the water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
