Wake up to the sound of roosters echoing through the hills of Penampang. The air is cool, the mist still hugging the trees, and somewhere nearby, a fire is already being lit for breakfast.

This is not a place you visit. This is a place you step into.

Here, you won’t find performances staged for tourists. Instead, you’ll be welcomed as a guest into real homes.

You’ll sit on the floor with your host family as they prepare your meal — rice steamed fresh, wild herbs gathered just hours before, recipes that carry stories of resilience and identity. You’ll walk alongside farmers who know every inch of the land, learning how the forest provides, heals, and sustains. You’ll listen to elders whose stories are not written in books, but lived — stories of heritage, change, and survival.

And as the sun sets behind the hills, you may find yourself in quiet conversation, or simply sitting in stillness — understanding something that cannot be explained, only experienced.

This is what community feels like.

By joining this experience, you are not just visiting Penampang — you are directly supporting a community that is protecting its culture, empowering its youth, and shaping its own future through tourism.

What You’ll Experience

  • Stay in a traditional village home with a local family
  • Learn to prepare and enjoy authentic Kadazan-Dusun meals
  • Explore farms, forests, and local livelihoods with community guides
  • Hear real stories from elders and youth
  • Experience daily village life — unfiltered and unscripted

WHAT YOU’LL BE EXPECTING?
DAY 1

Morning:

Arrive in Penampang, where your journey begins not with a check-in counter, but with people waiting to welcome you. You’ll be greeted with a simple but meaningful community welcome — a gesture that marks your transition from outsider to guest.

A gentle walk through the village follows. No rush, no script — just a first glimpse into daily life. Children playing, elders tending to plants, conversations flowing in the background.

Midday:

Step into the stories behind the community.

  • Learn how local initiatives are preserving culture, land, and livelihoods
  • Walk through farms and home gardens where food is grown, not bought
  • Discover traditional herbs — not as displays, but as everyday medicine

Then, head to the TAGAL system at Moyog River — a community-led conservation effort where nature is protected through shared responsibility. You’ll begin to understand: sustainability here is not a concept, it’s a way of life.

Afternoon:

Spend time with villagers as they go about their day. You might find yourself:

  • learning how rice wine is traditionally prepared
  • observing how homes are built around function, family, and environment
  • understanding how conservation is woven into daily routines

Evening:

Dinner is not served — it is shared. Sit with your host family over a traditional Kadazan-Dusun meal, prepared with ingredients sourced just hours earlier.

After dinner, gather for an intimate storytelling session. Under the quiet of the night, listen to conversations that go beyond tourism:

  • Indigenous relationships with land
  • Cultural traditions that are slowly disappearing elsewhere
  • Real stories of change, resilience, and identity

You will spend the night at the community homestay — simple, warm, and real.

DAY 2

Morning:

Share a simple breakfast with your host family before stepping into the day’s rhythm.

Morning Activities:

Walk along the forest edge near Taman Sondoton, guided by those who know it best.

  • Identify edible plants and forest resources
  • Learn how the community protects what it depends on

Then, get your hands involved in village life:

  • feed quails
  • prepare compost
  • harvest vegetables
  • understand traditional farming methods that prioritise sustainability over scale

Midday:

Enjoy lunch prepared by community cooks — a reflection of the land, season, and culture.

Afternoon:

Choose your experience based on what the village is doing that day.

    • Cook a traditional dish from scratch
    • Learn about forest herbs and their uses
    • Try rubber tapping with local farmers
    • Create simple crafts using traditional techniques
    • Or simply slow down, spend time by the river, or experience a traditional herbal foot soak — a quiet moment to reset.

Evening:

Dinner brings everyone back together — and the night unfolds into something special.

    • Experience a cultural evening filled with:
    • the graceful Sumazau dance
    • the deep, rhythmic sounds of gongs
    • stories expressed through movement and music
    • But this is not a performance for you.
You are invited to step in.
    • Try the dance. Wear the costume. Laugh, learn, connect.
    • This is cultural exchange in its truest form.

Day 3 (Final Day):
Morning:

    • Your final morning is slow and intentional.
    • Join in simple village activities:
    • prepare a traditional breakfast
    • try your hand at rice wine making
    • enjoy quiet pond fishing
    • or sit together for a reflection session with the community
    • This is where many realise — the experience was never about activities, but about connection.

Midday (Farewell):

Share one last meal together before a heartfelt farewell. No formalities — just gratitude, handshakes, maybe even hugs.
